RAB - Rab is the name of the island
as well as of the ancient town after which the island
was named. Rab experienced its greatest development during
the regin of romans, when the emperor Oktavian Augustus,
in the first century before Christ, gave the status of
municipium. His successors gave the town the honourable
name "felix". Today's town's appearance, numerus
monuments and the romains of strong fortresses are witnesses
to the long and interesting history of the town. In the
town there are four bell-towers, monuments and numerous
palaces of the rich Rab families.
One of the most beautiful parks in the Mediterranean,
"Komrčar", is placed right behind the old town.
Since Rab is a tipical Mediterranean town rich in historical
monuments, it attracted the first tourists already towards
the end of the 19th century, which also signifies the
begining of tourisam on Rab. |
